Walk Monday 26 March Westgate in Weardale

posted 15 Mar 2018, 14:40 by jenny rookes
Dear Green Mountaineers,
Come and celebrate the beginning of British Summer time with a lovely leg stretcher of a  walk ( the one that got snowed off last month).

We will start from The Hare and Hounds pub on the front street in Westgate in Weardale, at 11 a.m and you can park on the road just opposite.

The route begins with a gentle walk beside the River Wear before ascending the hillside, through farm land, above St Johns Chapel, to join a quiet road which contours back along the dale, giving spectacular views, before heading onto the high moorland and gradually climbing on rough tracks towards a "warded way" which heads steeply down to a stream. The route  first crosses, then follows the stream down a wooded valley through well preserved old mine workings, and a series of waterfalls before returning to the start at the village of Westgate. After which, a short drive takes us to tea and cake at the Chatterbox cafe in St John's chapel.

Slit Woods are full of interest, both historical and geological and the moors are home to nesting curlews, plovers and grouse.

The route has 160 metres of ascent but is not strenuous overall.

The start and meeting place is the Hare and Hounds Pub on Front Street, Westgate in Weardale . DL13 1RX.

Westgate is close to Stanhope on the A689 in Weardale.

If you are coming please let me know . Also if you need or can offer a car share .

Hope to see you there .
