Thanks to Steve and Gill who have offered to lead these walks, which both start from Dockray, near Ullswater. Both walks start from Dockray, Matterdale, Nr Ullswater at 10.30. Directions : Dockray is on the A5091 and you can get there either from the A592 which runs along Ullswater or by turning off the A66 at Troutbeck. It should take approximately 1hr 10 minutes from Throssel and 1 hour 40 from Newcastle. Parking : This is very limited in Dockray, although I am told there is a small car park associated with the start of the walk to Aira Force. For this reason I am suggesting that we meet in the car park at the Rheged Centre (just after Penrith turn off on M6) at 10 a.m. and share cars from there. Could you please tell Steve or me if you are coming so we know numbers- especially important if you are planning to meet up at the Rheged Centre. The walks : the longer walk on the attached pdf is taken from a website and its a bit long for a March day so we will shorten it by walking down from Great Dodd along a direct path back to the valley. This will miss out a couple of tops and miles and, though still stenuous, make it a sensible proposition . The shorter walk is as on the pdf. The shorter walk will leave plenty of time to carry on down to the shores of Ullswater ; alternatively there are plenty of cafes in Glenridding to meet up afterwards. Alternatively again, the short walkers may like to head back to the Rheged Centre or to Penrith and explore this lovely market town, perhaps meeting up at the café – 15 15 Victoria Road, Penrith, Cumbria, CA11 8HN |
