Sunday 21st April :2 walks near Buttermere

posted 5 Apr 2013, 13:15 by jenny rookes
It looks like the spring may finally be arriving and we are hoping that the world famous blue bells of Rannerdale will be putting on a great show . The two walks will both start from Rannerdale car park by Crummock Water and stay together for the first stretch to view the bluebells, after that we part - to meet up at the end of the day at Gill's hospitable house for tea and cake.
Walk 1 : Rannerdale to Buttermere via Squat Beck, passing through Buttermere to walk around Crummock Water, pausing to visit Scale Force in its narrow gorge, around the foot of Melbreak to Lanthwaite woods and Rannerdale or direct to Gill's. Approximately 7 miles of mainly flat Lakeside walking (although some people may wish to put in a diversion to climb the excellent view point of Rannerdale Knotts.
Walk 2 :  A high level, undulating ridge walk in the heart of the Lakes with spectacular views all the way. Rannerdale to Whiteless Pike, a steep but not unrelenting climb with plenty of excuses to stop and look back at the unfolding views towards the Buttermere skyline brings us to Wandhope and Eel Crag before we dip down to Coledale Hause where some of us will eat lunch while others will nip off to "bag" Grasmoor or Sail!. From Coledale Hause we begin the fantastic ridge walking to Hopegill Head and Whiteside where we drop down to Langthwaite Green and along the intake wall towards Gill's house.
This walk is approximately 7 miles ( although there are many possible variations so its hard to be sure) and about 2900 feet of ascent.

Meet at 10.15 at Rannerdale Car Park ( by Crummock Water ) or in Buttermere itself where there is a NT car park free to members and other spaces which however have to be paid for. Anyone intending to come on this walk please contact myself or Gill to arrange final details and car sharing.
