Kirkby Stephen 6th March 2011

The next walk will take place on the first sunday in March, rather than our usual second sunday, because we are meeting up with the Leeds Group (and maybe some Lancastrians as well ?) in Kirkby Stephen, where they are having a weekend retreat with Rev Mugo and Rev Roland.

We will meet in the Christian Head  car park in the centre of Kirkby Stephen (CA17 4HA) which seems to be reached by turning down Silver Street at a mini roundabout from the main street of Kirkby Stephen - A685 - more or less opposite the Parish Church - and carrying on along Christian Head Road towards the Grammar School. Apparently the parking is free!

I have only included one walk, which ascends out of Kirkby Stephen along a river bank and then climbs up to take in the wonderful views of the Eden Valley. Walkers who feel more energetic can divert from the route to climb up to the wonderful and enigmatic Nine Standards Rigg - a monument which dominates the top of the escarpment and the long views of the moors beyond - but no one knows who built them or why!

After the walk we can all meet up again for tea and chat - maybe planning future walks and get togethers for the various Groups.

The path up to Nine Standards is quite rocky in places, so good stout boots are recommended and you should bring warm, waterproof clothing and whatever food and drink you will need for the day.

April will see us in the Lake District again - would be good to find some daffodils!
